Curtain Size Chart: Standard Lengths & Widths | Ona

Standard curtain sizes follow a short list. Lengths are 63, 84, 96, 108 and 120 inches, and many ranges add 72, 90 or 95 inches. Ready-made panels are usually about 40 to 55 inches wide. Sizes are written width × length for one panel, so 52 × 84 means a panel 52 inches wide and 84 inches long.

Ona makes 168 size and color options: panels 42″, 52″ or 70″ wide, and 63″ to 120″ long. Every listed size is the flat size of one panel. A pair is two panels, and folds use some of that width once the curtains hang.

Standard curtain lengths

Most ready-made curtains come in a short list of lengths. Each one suits a different rod height, from sill-length panels to floor-to-ceiling drapes.

Standard curtain lengths in inches, feet and centimeters
Length In feet In cm Where it usually lands At Ona
63″ 5 ft 3 in 160 cm Sill or apron length on many windows; low windows Grommet pair, back-tab pair, velvet pair
72″ 6 ft 183 cm Between 63″ and 84″; reaches the floor under a 7 ft ceiling Grommet pair, back-tab pair, velvet pair
84″ 7 ft 213 cm Floor length with the rod a few inches above a standard window, often on an 8 ft ceiling Grommet pair, back-tab pair, velvet pair
90″ 7 ft 6 in 229 cm Floor length with a higher rod on an 8 ft ceiling All four styles
95″ 7 ft 11 in 241 cm Floor length with the rod close to an 8 ft ceiling Not made; 96″ is closest
96″ 8 ft 244 cm Higher rods; floats under a 9 ft ceiling All four styles
102″ 8 ft 6 in 259 cm Rods close to some 9 ft ceilings Not made
108″ 9 ft 274 cm 9 ft and 10 ft ceilings All four styles (grommet pair at 52″ wide only)
120″ 10 ft 305 cm 10 ft ceilings and tall windows Back-tab pair
132″–144″ 11–12 ft 335–366 cm Very tall rooms; often custom-made Not made

Quick conversions: 84 inches = 7 feet. 96 inches = 8 feet. 108 inches = 9 feet. 120 inches = 10 feet. Divide inches by 12 for feet, or multiply by 2.54 for centimeters.

Shorter café and tier curtains, often 24 to 36 inches long, cover only the lower part of a window. Ona doesn't make them. Its shortest length is 63″.

Standard curtain widths: how wide are curtain panels?

There is no single standard width. Most ready-made panels are about 40 to 55 inches wide, and 50″ and 52″ are among the most common. Extra-wide panels of 100″ or more exist, usually as specialty or custom sizes.

Width matters less than it seems, because you choose how many panels to hang. What counts is the total flat fabric across the rod.

Common curtain panel widths and the rod each suits (flat width per panel)
Width per panel In feet / cm Where you'll see it Flat fabric in 2 panels Rod it suits at 2× fullness Rod it suits at 1.5×

50″ 4 ft 2 in / 127 cm Common ready-made width 100″ 50″ 67″
52″ 4 ft 4 in / 132 cm Common ready-made width; Ona grommet, back-tab and velvet pairs 104″ 52″ 69″

100″+ 8 ft 4 in+ / 254 cm+ Extra-wide specialty panels (Ona doesn't make these) 200″+ 100″+ 133″+

"Rod it suits" is the flat fabric divided by the fullness. At 2×, a pair of 52″ panels (104″ of fabric) suits a rod about 52″ wide.

How to read a curtain size

Width comes first. "52 × 84" means 52 inches wide by 84 inches long. In feet, that is about 4 ft 4 in by 7 ft.

Check whether the size is per panel or per pair. At Ona, every listed size is for one panel. A 52 × 84 pair is two panels, each 52 × 84, so 104 inches of flat fabric in total. The wide format is a single 70″ panel. Other stores vary, so look for "per panel" on any listing.

Flat width isn't covered width. Curtains hang in folds, so a pair covers much less than its flat width. That is why a 104″ pair suits a rod of about 52″, not 104″, at Ona's default 2× fullness.

Pleated headings can differ. Some pleated curtains are sold by their finished, already-pleated width. Read the listing before you compare it with a flat panel.

What size curtains do you need?

Four measurements and two formulas give you a size. Ona's curtain calculator does the math, and the guide to how to measure for curtains shows each step.

  1. Rod width. Measure the usable rod from end to end, excluding decorative finials. No rod yet? Use the window width plus the overhang you plan on each side. Many people run the rod 8″ to 10″ past each side of the frame. That is a styling choice, not a rule.
  2. Drop. Measure from where the fabric top will sit down to the floor, or to wherever you want the hem.
  3. Width. Multiply the rod width by your fullness to get the total flat fabric. Ona's default is 2×, and the calculator lets you choose 1× to 3×. Divide by one panel's width and round up. For a center split, use an even number of panels.
  4. Length. Subtract ½″ from the drop for a clean float, keep it equal for a floor kiss, or add about 2″ for a soft break. For a deeper puddle, add about 4″.

The formulas Total flat fabric = rod width × 2 Panels = total flat fabric ÷ panel width (round up) Length = drop − ½″ (float) · drop (kiss) · drop + 2″ (soft break)

Worked example. A 72″ window with the rod 10″ past each side gives a 92″ rod. At 2×, that is 184″ of flat fabric. With 52″ panels, 184 ÷ 52 = 3.5, so four panels, or two pairs (208″, about 2.3×). With the fabric top at 84½″ above the floor, 84″ panels float just clear of it.

Ona measures length from the fabric top to the hem. Grommets sit below the fabric top, and back tabs hold the rod behind the panel, so the fabric top is not the same as the top of the rod.

Every Ona curtain size

Ona makes four styles. All sizes below are flat dimensions per panel. A pair contains two panels, and the wide panel is sold one at a time. Solid colors only. There are no custom sizes, and no rods, rings or hooks are included.

All four are listed as thermal insulating; there is no insulation rating. Light can still enter at the top, sides and center of any curtain, so hang them high, wide and overlapping for the darkest room. "Linen Texture" describes the look of the weave, not the fiber.

What size curtains for your window width

Find your window width, then read across. Each row assumes the rod runs 10″ past each side of the frame (rod = window + 20″) and uses Ona's default 2× fullness. Pairs split evenly, one panel per side; wide panels are counted in even numbers for a center split. Your own rod width will give a more exact answer in the curtain calculator.

"1 pair, 52″" can be the grommet, back-tab or velvet pair. The 42″ width comes only in the grommet pair, up to 96″ long. Wide panels come in 90, 96 and 108″, so for a shorter length on a wide window, use 42″ or 52″ pairs instead.

For a lighter, flatter look, 1.5× is enough. Two wide panels on a 92″ rod (a 72″ window) give about 1.5×.

Hanging several pairs or panels in one color? Order them together, and keep one style per window.

Covering a sliding glass door? The same math applies. See sliding door curtains for 5, 6 and 8 ft doors.

Curtain length by ceiling height

Ceiling height sets the longest curtain you can hang, and rod height decides which length fits. Measure your own ceiling: many "8 ft" rooms are a little over or under 96″. Leave space above the rod for brackets and any crown molding.

10 ft (120″) 108″, 120″ 108″ floats at 108½″. 120″ (back-tab pair only) breaks or puddles with the fabric top at 116–118″. Curtains for a 10 foot ceiling
12 ft (144″) 120″ 120″ floats with the fabric top at 120½″, about 2 ft below the ceiling. Ona makes no 132″ or 144″ panels. —

Ona's measuring guide gives a simple starting point by rod height. With the rod about 4–6″ above the frame, start with 84″ or 96″ panels. With the rod about 10″ above the frame, start with 96″ or 108″. With the rod near the ceiling, start with 108″, or 120″ in the back-tab pair.

Where to hang each Ona length

Set the fabric top at this height above the floor for each hem finish.

108″ 108½″ 108″ 106″ 104″
120″ 120½″ 120″ 118″ 116″

63″ and 72″ panels usually end above the floor. Their hem lands 63″ or 72″ below the fabric top, often near the sill or below it. A float is easiest for curtains you open and close every day. Fabric resting on the floor gives a relaxed look but collects dust.

Sizes Ona doesn't make

  • Lengths under 63″. No café, tier or kitchen-length curtains.
  • 95″, 102″, 132″ and 144″. Choose 96″ in place of 95″. For very tall rooms, 120″ is the longest Ona length.
  • Panels wider than 70″. Combine panels instead, using the window chart above.
  • Custom or made-to-measure sizes. Ona sells the listed sizes only.
  • Rods, rings and hooks. Choose hardware that fits your window and passes through the grommets or rod pocket.

Between two lengths? Choose the shorter one and hang it a little lower for a float, or the longer one for a soft break. Hemming is another option.

Curtain size FAQ

What are standard curtain sizes?

Standard ready-made curtains are about 40 to 55 inches wide per panel and 63, 84, 96, 108 or 120 inches long, with 72, 90 and 95 inches in some ranges. Sizes are written width × length for one panel, so 52 × 84 means one panel 52 inches wide and 84 inches long.

What are the standard curtain lengths in feet?

63″ is 5 ft 3 in, 72″ is 6 ft, 84″ is 7 ft, 90″ is 7 ft 6 in, 96″ is 8 ft, 108″ is 9 ft and 120″ is 10 ft. In centimeters, those are about 160, 183, 213, 229, 244, 274 and 305 cm.

How wide is a standard curtain panel?

Most ready-made panels are about 40 to 55 inches wide, and 50″ and 52″ are among the most common widths. Ona panels are 42″ or 52″ wide in pairs, or 70″ wide as a single panel.

Are all curtains 52 inches wide?

No. 52″ is a common width, but ready-made panels vary by brand and style. Ona makes 42″, 52″ and 70″ panels, so check the width on each listing.

What does 52 x 84 mean on curtains?

It means one panel is 52 inches wide and 84 inches long, measured flat. Width comes first. A 52 × 84 pair has two of those panels, or 104 inches of flat fabric in total. In feet, 52 × 84 is about 4 ft 4 in wide by 7 ft long.

Are curtain sizes per panel or per pair?

At Ona, every listed size is the flat size of one panel. A pair contains two panels of that size, and the wide format is one panel. Other stores vary, so check whether a listing says per panel.

What size curtains do I need?

Measure the rod width without finials and the drop from the fabric top to the floor. For width, aim for about 2× the rod width in total flat fabric, then divide by one panel's width and round up. For length, choose about ½″ less than the drop to float, the same as the drop to kiss the floor, or about 2″ more for a soft break.

How many curtain panels do I need?

Multiply the rod width by 2, divide by one panel's flat width, and round up. For a 92″ rod, 184 ÷ 52 = 3.5, so you need four 52″ panels, or two pairs. With 70″ wide panels, 184 ÷ 70 = 2.6, so use three panels drawn to one side, or four for an even split.

What size curtains for a 72-inch window?

With the rod 10″ past each side, a 72″ window has a 92″ rod and needs about 184″ of flat fabric at 2× fullness. Two Ona 52″ pairs (four panels, 208″) give about 2.3×. Two 42″ grommet pairs (168″) give about 1.8×. Choose the length from your rod height.

What size curtain rod for a 72-inch window?

A rod about 88 to 92 inches long runs 8 to 10 inches past each side of the frame, so open curtains can stack beside the glass. That overhang is a styling choice, not a fixed rule. Ona doesn't sell rods.

What length curtains for an 8-foot ceiling?

On an 8 ft (96″) ceiling, 84″ panels float with the fabric top at 84½″, and 90″ panels float with the fabric top at 90½″. 96″ panels reach the floor only with the fabric top at about 92–94″, close to the ceiling, so they break or puddle rather than float.

How long are 96-inch curtains in feet?

96 inches is 8 feet, or about 244 cm. 84 inches is 7 feet, 108 inches is 9 feet and 120 inches is 10 feet.

Should I get 63 or 84 inch curtains?

Choose 63″ for shorter curtains that end near or below the sill, or for low windows. Choose 84″ or longer to reach the floor. 84″ panels float just above the floor when the fabric top sits at 84½″.

Is there a curtain length between 63 and 84 inches?

Yes. 72″, or 6 ft, sits between them. Ona makes 72″ panels in the grommet pair, the back-tab pair and two velvet colors.

Is there a curtain length between 84 and 96 inches?

Yes. 90″, or 7 ft 6 in, is the in-between length, and some stores also sell 95″. Ona makes 90″ in all four styles, but no 95″.

Do curtains come shorter than 63 inches?

Yes. Café and tier curtains are often 24 to 36 inches long. Ona's shortest length is 63″, and Ona doesn't make café or tier curtains.

Does Ona make custom or extra-long sizes?

Ona sells listed sizes only, with no custom or made-to-measure option. The longest Ona length is 120″, in the back-tab pair, and the widest panel is 70″. Rods and hardware are not included.

Which Ona sizes are blackout?

The grommet pair, the wide panel and the back-tab pair use 100% blackout fabric in every size and color. Light can still enter at the top, sides and center. The velvet pair is room-darkening and unlined, not blackout.
