Curtain Length for 8 Foot Ceilings | Ona
On an 8-foot (96″) ceiling, 90″ curtains give the cleanest floor-length fit: they kiss the floor when the fabric top sits 6″ below the ceiling. Choose 96″ only when the fabric top sits 2–4″ below the ceiling, so the hem rests softly on the floor. Choose 84″ when the fabric top sits just above the window.
- 8 ft = 96″ from floor to ceiling
- Ona lengths that fit: 84″, 90″ and 96″
- Measure from the fabric top to the floor, not from the rod
- Sizes are flat, per panel. 1 pair = 2 panels; the wide panel is 1 panel.

8-foot ceiling curtain length chart
Choose your length by where the top edge of the fabric will sit. Each cell shows that fabric-top height, measured up from the floor, and the space it leaves below a 96″ ceiling.
Fabric-top height for each Ona length under an 8 ft (96″) ceiling
| Ona length (per panel) | Float: ½″ above the floor | Kiss: touches the floor | Soft break: 2″ on the floor | Puddle: 4″ on the floor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 84″ | 84½″ · 11½″ below ceiling | 84″ · 12″ below | 82″ · 14″ below | 80″ · 16″ below |
| 90″ | 90½″ · 5½″ below | 90″ · 6″ below | 88″ · 8″ below | 86″ · 10″ below |
| 96″ | Not possible: 96½″ is above the ceiling | 96″ · at the ceiling (ceiling-mounted track only) | 94″ · 2″ below | 92″ · 4″ below |
How to read it:
- The rule. Fabric-top height = length + ½″ to float, the length itself to kiss, length − 2″ for a soft break, or length − 4″ to puddle.
- Fabric top is not rod height. Grommets and back tabs carry fabric above the rod, so the rod sits a little lower than these numbers. See how high to hang.
- Your ceiling may not be exactly 96″. Measure it. For any other drop, use the curtain calculator.
Which length suits your 8-foot room?
It depends on how high you want the curtains to start. Three placements work under an 8-foot ceiling. The examples assume a window frame that tops out at 80″ from the floor; measure yours.
84″: fabric top just above the window
With the fabric top 4″ above an 80″ frame, 84″ panels kiss the floor. This is the classic, easy placement. It leaves about a foot of bare wall above the curtains, so the window reads at its true height.
Ona offers 84″ in the grommet pair (42″ or 52″ wide per panel), the back-tab pair and the velvet pair. The wide panel starts at 90″. Shop 84 inch curtains
90″: fabric top 6″ below the ceiling
Raise the fabric top to 90″, about two-thirds of the way from frame to ceiling, and 90″ panels kiss the floor. Set it at 90½″ and they float. The curtains start well above the window, and there's still room for brackets below the ceiling or crown molding.
Many ready-made ranges jump from 84″ to 95″ or 96″. Ona offers 90″ in all four styles (velvet in Dark Gray and Sage Green).
96″: fabric top 2–4″ below the ceiling
Set the fabric top at 94″ and 96″ panels rest about 2″ on the floor in a soft break. At 92″ they puddle about 4″. This is the tallest look an 8-foot room allows. The rod sits close to the ceiling, so check that your bracket fits first.
96″ panels can't float under an 8-foot ceiling. To clear the floor, the fabric top would have to sit above the ceiling.
Ona offers 96″ in all four styles, including the 70″ wide panel. Shop 96 inch curtains
What about 63″, 72″ and 108″?
63″ and 72″ are short lengths for sill- or apron-length curtains. They don't reach the floor from a rod above the window. 108″ is too long here: even with the fabric top 2″ below the ceiling, about 14″ would pool on the floor. Ona sells set lengths only, with no custom sizes.
84″ vs 90″ vs 96″ on an 8-foot ceiling
| 84″ | 90″ | 96″ | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric top for a floor kiss | 84″ | 90″ | 96″, at the ceiling (not practical on a rod) |
| Wall left above the fabric | about 12″ | about 6″ | 2–4″ |
| Hem finishes possible | float, kiss, break, puddle | float, kiss, break, puddle | soft break or puddle only |
| The look | classic, at window height | tall and tailored | tallest, relaxed hem |
| Ona styles | grommet pair, back-tab pair, velvet | all four (velvet: 2 colors) | all four (velvet: 2 colors) |
How high should you hang curtains on an 8-foot ceiling?
Put the fabric top anywhere from just above the window frame to about 2″ below the ceiling. For most 8-foot rooms, a fabric top 6″ below the ceiling with 90″ panels balances height and room for hardware.
Then set the rod from the fabric top, not the other way round:
Rod height = fabric-top height − header allowance
The header allowance is the fabric that sits above the rod. On grommet curtains, it's the band of fabric above the grommets. On the back-tab pair, it depends on whether you hang it from the tabs or the rod pocket. It varies by style.
Worked example. You want 90″ panels to kiss the floor. Your style carries 1½″ of fabric above the rod (an example figure, not an Ona spec). Set the top of the rod at 88½″. The fabric top lands at 90″ and the hem meets the floor.
- Crown molding. Treat the underside of the molding as your ceiling. With 3″ of molding, you have 93″ to work with. 90″ panels still kiss with 3″ to spare. 96″ panels only work as a 4″ puddle, with the fabric top 1″ below the molding.
- Brackets. Leave room for the bracket and rod above the fabric. If the bracket won't fit, use the next placement down.
- Uneven floors. Measure the drop at both ends and in the middle. Size a float to the shortest figure, so the hem clears the floor everywhere.
- Rugs and carpet. Measure to the surface the hem will touch.
How to measure for curtains in an 8-foot room
Measure the room, choose the fabric-top height, then pick the length.
- Measure floor to ceiling at the left, center and right of the window. Note the lowest figure. Many "8-foot" rooms measure a little over or under 96″.
- Choose a fabric-top height from the chart: about 84″, 90″, or 92–94″.
- Choose a hem. Your length is the fabric-top height minus ½″ to float, the same to kiss, plus 2″ for a soft break or plus 4″ to puddle.
- Measure the rod width end to end, without finials. Plan 2× that in total flat fabric.
- Enter both numbers in the curtain calculator. It returns the Ona panel size and how many pairs or panels you need.
How wide should the curtains be?
Ceiling height sets the length; the rod sets the width. Ona's default is 2× the rod width in total flat fabric, with the rod measured without finials. You can choose anywhere from 1× to 3× in the calculator.
| Rod width (without finials) | Ona set at 2× fullness | Total flat fabric |
|---|---|---|
| up to 42″ | 1 grommet pair, 42″ wide per panel | 84″ |
| up to 52″ | 1 pair, 52″ wide per panel (grommet, back tab or velvet) | 104″ |
| up to 70″ | 2 wide panels, 70″ each | 140″ |
| up to 104″ | 2 pairs, 52″ wide per panel | 208″ |
| up to 140″ | 4 wide panels | 280″ |
Listed widths are flat; folds reduce the width the curtains cover. The wide panel comes in 90″, 96″ and 108″ lengths, so it suits the 90″ and 96″ placements but not 84″. Run the rod past the window on both sides so open curtains clear the glass. If you hang more than one pair on a window, order them together in one color.
Blackout curtains for an 8-foot ceiling
Three Ona styles have supplier-listed 100% blackout fabric: the grommet pair, the 70″ wide panel and the back-tab pair. Light can still enter at the top, sides and center, so fit matters as much as fabric. Ona hasn't independently tested these claims.
On an 8-foot ceiling:
- Raise the fabric top. A fabric top at 90–94″ covers the wall above the frame and leaves less space for light over the rod.
- Go to the floor. A kiss or a soft break closes the gap at the hem.
- Go wide. Run the rod past the frame on both sides and use 2× fullness so the panels meet in the middle. For the darkest room, extend coverage above and beyond both sides of the window.
- Velvet is different. The velvet pair is unlined and room-darkening, not blackout.
All four styles are listed by the supplier as thermal insulating; none has an insulation rating. Shop blackout curtains

Curtains for 8-foot ceilings: FAQ
What length curtains do I need for an 8 foot ceiling?
Choose 90″ curtains to kiss the floor with the fabric top 6″ below the ceiling, or 96″ to rest softly on the floor with the fabric top 2–4″ below it. Choose 84″ if the fabric top sits just above the window, at about 84″.
Are 96 inch curtains too long for an 8 foot ceiling?
Not if the fabric top sits 92–94″ from the floor; the hem then rests 2–4″ on the floor. Hang them lower and more fabric pools. They can never float under an 8-foot ceiling, because the fabric top would have to sit above the ceiling.
Are 84 inch curtains long enough for an 8 foot ceiling?
Yes, when the fabric top sits at about 84″, roughly 4″ above an 80″ window frame. Hang them higher and they float well off the floor: with the fabric top at 90″, 84″ panels end 6″ above it.
How high should I hang curtains with an 8 foot ceiling?
Place the fabric top between just above the window frame and about 2″ below the ceiling. A fabric top 6″ below the ceiling (90″ from the floor) with 90″ panels is the balanced middle, and it leaves room for brackets.
How far below the ceiling should a curtain rod go?
Set the rod so the fabric top lands where you want it: rod height equals fabric-top height minus the fabric above the rod. With Ona's 84″, 90″ and 96″ lengths, that puts the fabric top 2–12″ below an 8-foot ceiling.
Can curtains go all the way to the ceiling with an 8 foot ceiling?
To kiss the floor from the ceiling itself, a curtain needs a 96″ drop and ceiling-mounted hardware. Ona doesn't sell rods or tracks. With a wall-mounted rod, 96″ panels with the fabric top 2–4″ below the ceiling come close.
Should curtains touch the floor with an 8 foot ceiling?
It's a style choice. A ½″ float suits easy everyday use, a kiss looks tailored, and a 2–4″ break feels relaxed. Under an 8-foot ceiling, 90″ panels can do any of them; 96″ panels can only break or puddle.
Will 95 inch curtains work on an 8 foot ceiling?
Yes, if the fabric top sits about 93–95″ from the floor, which puts the hem between a 2″ break and a kiss. Ona doesn't offer 95″. Its 96″ panels are 1″ longer, so they give a soft break with the fabric top at 94″.
Is an 8 ft curtain the same as a 96 inch curtain?
Yes. 8 ft = 96″, so an "8 ft curtain" is a 96″ panel. That is the full height of an 8-foot room, which is why 96″ curtains reach the floor only when the fabric top sits close to the ceiling.
Do grommets change how long my curtains hang?
Yes. Grommet curtains carry a band of fabric above the rod, so the fabric top sits higher than the rod. Measure your drop from the planned fabric top, then set the rod lower by the amount of fabric your style carries above it.
What are the best blackout curtains for an 8 foot ceiling?
Look for lined, floor-length panels you can hang high and wide. Ona's grommet pair, wide panel and back-tab pair have supplier-listed 100% blackout fabric in 84″, 90″ and 96″ (the wide panel in 90″ and 96″ only). Light can still enter at the top, sides and center.
