Cornell's fact sheet recommends one because the extra layer holds a little more air. Ona hasn't measured any of these curtains, so treat that as a rule of thumb, not a rating. For the coldest windows, start with a lined pair. Choose the velvet when you want its color and texture, then hang it with the same care.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHow to hang thermal curtains for winter\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fabric is only part of it. How you hang it decides how much still air the curtain can hold. Cornell describes the problem as a \"tunnel\": warm room air enters the gap at the top, cools against the glass, sinks and pours out under the hem. Each step below closes part of that loop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eCover the frame.\u003c\/strong\u003e Mount the rod above the window and extend it past both sides, so the closed panels cover the trim and the wall around it as well as the glass. Ona's fit guide gives the same advice for the darkest room: extend coverage above and beyond both sides.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eHang to the floor.\u003c\/strong\u003e Choose a floor kiss (0″) or a puddle (+4″). A hem that stops partway down the wall leaves the bottom of the tunnel open. If a radiator or window seat sits below, end at the sill instead. The U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Saver team gives the same advice for south-facing windows. A cornice board over the rod closes the top. A wraparound (return) rod brings the outer edges back to the wall.
